This equipment will be utilized to facilitate point-of-care obstetric and pediatric services at the Weipa Hospital and our outreach locations which include the communities of Napranum, Mapoon and Aurukun. This service, is part of The Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service through Queensland Health.
Weipa is a remote community in Far North Queensland's Cape York peninsula. The population of Weipa and surrounding Aboriginal communities of Napranum, Mapoon and Aurukun is 6000 with the First Nations population ranging between 20-90%. The predominant industry in Weipa is Bauxite mining run by Rio Tinto and the closest referral hospital is Cairns 800 km away. Weipa is inaccessible in the wet season by road between Dec and Apr.
This ultrasound would enhance our team's capabilities to improve remote community outcomes. Weipa Hospital recently reopened birthing services after 25years (MW, GPO, GPA, nursing and allied health), re-establishing an overdue, vitally important service, providing integrated, holistic, culturally appropriate birthing services for women safe to birth in Weipa. Rural maternity services have outcomes comparable to urban counterparts with net benefit of reducing social, cultural and economic stressors for women and families, whilst reducing health system costs.
After the immediate postnatal period, child and maternal health nurses, allied health team and rural generalist doctors look after the health of our children, providing community/emergency/hospital-based care. This combined service (maternity/child health) focuses on the first 1000 day initiative, acknowledging improvements in child health outcomes improve community health.
