The equipment allows for portable hearing testing at preschools and schools, which target local Aboriginal Communities (who have a high incidence of ear disease) and vulnerable families. They test a large number of children in one day, at one location. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander families and Culturally and Linguistically diverse families often have many obstacles attending our clinics. Their outreach clinics provide ease of access and enable us to better meet the needs of the communities, ensuring early identification and appropriate referral for hearing loss. The equipment is light weight and ‘all in one’, which would reduce the amount of equipment needed to carry. It would also allow for additional testing outside the clinic space, which would assist in reducing the current wait times at each clinic.
Currently, only one child can be seen at a time in the clinic space. As the equipment is portable, this would allow the team to reach vulnerable families, including Aboriginal communities, and help monitor and reduce the incidence of middle ear conditions. It will help them to overcome barriers that may prevent children from attending our clinics and allow us to reach a larger proportion of children.
