This is a point-of-care paediatric ultrasound improves care for children and neonates in critical areas like emergency, special care nursery, and theatres. The advantages of this ultrasound are fewer painful IV attempts, portability for emergencies, quick diagnosis, training for new doctors, and better pain management, reducing narcotic use, transfers, and complications.
At Lismore Base Hospital, it will be used in emergency situations and theatres for difficult intravenous cannulations in neonates and children, for investigation of acute abdomens and heart issues, for training new medical graduates in simulation training on manikins and for advanced regional analgesia modalities in paediatrics in acute trauma and after surgery. Due to the nature of rural health and lack of funding, clincians are struggling to provide high quality care with outdated equipment.
