Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, one of the biggest tertiary hospitals in Queensland, require specialised blades for their video laryngoscope in order to ensure safe intubation for their young patients. Due to the increased number of paediatric presentations in hospital, the blades frequently need to be clinically sterilized for a number of hours. During this downtime, their video laryngoscope is unavailable to use which is dangerous especially during an emergency.
Use of laryngoscope with video improves the success rate of a very high risk procedure, such as securing the airway on a sick and unstable baby. It also provides opportunity for teaching junior registrars the technique while being able to visualise what they see, which makes it a better and safer training experience.
