If access to a vein cannot be established during resuscitation of a baby or child, the EZ IO drill kit can be used to place a needle into one of the patient’s large bones. It takes about 10 seconds and can then be attached to a line through which lifesaving medication and fluids can be administered. An access point for fluid and medication is vital to the resuscitation process and has life-saving implications. With an increase in presentation numbers and acuity, it is imperative to have all equipment that can be potentially lifesaving in a resuscitation. Where IV access is delayed or unable to be achieved an IO is a lifesaving piece of equipment that can ensure optimal patient care and outcomes.
