Extremely premature neonates are fed via gastric tube until they are ready for breast feed. By using traditional gravity feed method, milk is delivered at inconsistent rates and this may lead to feeding intolerance. Extremely preterm neonates receive milk feeds every 1 to 2 hours and nurses need to manually control milk feed administration which is not only time consuming but delivers milk at inconsistent rate. These enteral feeding pumps will be used to assist in delivering milk at consistent rates and frees up valuable nursing time to perform other tasks. At the moment, Nepean is requiring funding to support their 37 bed NICU and are working with outdated equipment which needs replacing.
