SPECIAL PROJECT WISH 2: CLOWN DOCTORS, Queensland Children’s Hospital, Pegg Leditschke Children’s Burns Centre, QLD
$68,990.00
QCH operates Queensland’s leading burns unit for children, providing the ‘gold standard’ for children sustaining a burn injury. Of the more than 1,200 burns patients treated each year, around 40% are under two years of age. Children with burns injuries can be very distressed, and endure painful, often repeated procedures. The Clown Doctors play a vital and essential role in helping to distract anxious children, working in partnership with the medical teams to help calm the child and their family while the child is undergoing treatment.
Clown Doctors are specially trained to work sensitively in hospital settings alongside medical and healthcare professionals delivering doses of fun and laughter to empower children and make hospital a less scary place to be. They deliver personalised engagements to address the physiological and psychological needs of patients by making them laugh in environments that are often isolating and filled with anxiety. Through fun and play they engage with children at their bedside, parodying hospital routines, intimidating medical jargon and procedures through tailored improvisations helping to comfort children and their families during times of serious illness, trauma, and stressful situations.
Humpty has proudly supported Clown Doctors since 2005 and is now seeking a donor to help fund the program at QCH Burns Centre. This donation will enable two Clown Doctors to conduct a one hour Burns Clinic each day, five days a week, 50 weeks over the year (250 sessions in total) to help children, staff and their families.
